Art direction, visual imagery, sprites and frame by frame animation



Action based platformer Rift Keep unfolds in a grim fantasy world where the main character fights for his freedom.
I created the designs and visuals of the main character, enemies, environment and animated them frame by frame.

The game was developed at the peak of the souls-like indie games.
The dev team and I focused on high quality visuals, atmosphere, and balanced gameplay.
Art and Design
Inspiration sources were classic platformers like Prince of Persia, as well as frescoes and medieval paintings.
Working on character design, I emphasized silhouettes and color coding.


For a balanced and interesting combat system, the Rift Keep team meticulously worked on timings and readability of enemy movements. It was a real challenge to animate movement.
Technical Implementation
We've introduced dynamic lighting using normal mapping and other effects.
All technical implementation was handled by Mikhail Chernavsky and Nikolay Grishachyov.


A vertical slice was presented at the annual video game exhibition DevGamm 2018.
